Family Science Night – Thursday, March 7th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

A message from the PTA:  Our wonderful and talented Science teacher, Ms. Ursula Sexton, has been busy creating a wonderful Science / STEM night for all students and families.  We encourage you to come to this free, PTA sponsored event designed for parents to join their children in experiencing the wonder and awe of science!  Each grade level will have activities set up in classrooms along with the ever-popular science lab dig, and analyses of skeletons from owl pellets done by our 3rd graders.  We are also excited to announce that this year UC Davis Exploratory Science Center will be transforming our MPR into a hands-on science museum!  Weather permitting we will also have Astronomers on the blacktop until 9:00 p.m. for your viewing enjoyment!  You will not want to miss these experiences!  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b094ca9af29a13-family

This event will not be possible without parent and high school volunteers.  We have set up volunteer slots so that you will still be able to enjoy the night with your child either before or after your shift!  Thank you!

Health News:

Medications at School

California State law (Educational Code 49423 & 49423.1 prohibits students from carrying medication or inhaled asthma medication at school without paperwork filled out by the physician and the parent/guardian.  This paperwork must be updated annually or more frequently if there are any changes to the medication, dosage, or frequency of administration.  Please call or stop by the office for a form if needed.  Thank you for keeping our students safe and healthy!

A Note from Nurse Kay

Our annual Health Screening for Vision and Hearing finished up last week.  These screenings took place over three days in order to test all Kindergarten, 2nd, and 5th grade students.  The vision screening was done by an optometrist and I conducted the hearing tests.  If your child passed the exams, we do not contact you.  However if a child does not pass one or both of the tests, a referral letter is mailed home.

Natalie Gayler helped line up some wonderful parent volunteers who assisted me with a variety of duties on the screening days.  Special thanks for the following parents: Teresa Novotny, Venkata Yellapantula, Malavika Tatavarthy, Sandrine Bangura, Diana Autrand, Sheetal Chaudhari, Laurie Fairbanks, and Arlene Thompson.  Your time was greatly appreciated!  A great team effort!

Spring officially arrives in three weeks and it often comes with increased asthma and/or allergy symptoms.  If your child requires medication during school hours, you will need to fill out a district Medication Form and have it signed by your doctor.  This applies to both prescription and over-the-counter medications.  There are no exceptions.  All medication orders need to be renewed every school year.  Please bring the medication in the original container/box and make sure the medication has not expired.  All meds need to be picked up on the last day of school in May.

March is National Nutrition Month.  Think of some new ways to brighten your food intake.  Try a new fruit or vegetable each week, consider a new recipe or try new ingredients in a favorite one, and be more conscious of healthy portions, especially with snacks.  Plan to eat more meals together as a family.

If you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.  I am hear at Montevideo on Wednesdays and happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you a great Spring,

Kay M. Smith, RN, PHN, MA

Plastic Initiative- Marker Recycling

Mrs. Gersho’s class is brainstorming ideas to reduce plastic waste so they have established a marker recycling initiative here at Montevideo.  If you have any old, dried out markers at home your child can bring them to the office or to their classroom and Room 13 will send them to Crayola’s marker recycling program!
